Shmitoh Alert 1

SHMITOH ALERT – BULLETIN 1

Rosh HaShonoh 5768 marks the commencement of the Shmitoh Year. This results in many Israeli products becoming subject to the complex Halachic restrictions that affect Shmitoh produce. The common practice is therefore to obviate the potential difficulties by avoiding the purchase of such produce. Fresh vegetables, which gain their Shmitoh status if packed after Rosh Hashonoh, can be in our shops literally within days. Others arrive in the UK during the course of the season. Fruit trees are governed by blossoming rather than harvesting and therefore the Shmitoh issue will only impact later in the year. Please be aware that the following are to now to be found in the shops: Butternut Squash - Celery - Cherry Tomatoes –– Fresh Herbs – Galia Melons– Peppers - Sweet Corn (Fresh and Frozen) – Sweet Potatoes - Pleasant smelling Flowers
